The History of the Internet

Preface

Why I wrote this.

I stumbled upon some Internet history sites during my normal surfing routine, and I was reminded of the origins and original purpose of the Internet, and the World Wide Web, and found it interesting that some of the things we are talking about today, were actually part of the original concept for the Web (collaborative facilities - blawgs, web conferencing, etc.).

I also found the exercise of assembling this information to be a great example of how powerful the Internet can be as an information source, since I didn't crack a book to do this piece. And finally, I was hoping to demonstrate the full potential of blogs as a communications tool, and information medium, since all these hyperlinks are a perfect way to highlight the powerful resource this could be for communicating information to your clients.

So, I hope you enjoy reviewing this brief historical review of the origins of the Internet and the World Wide Web. Even if the topic doesn't interest you, take a look at how we assembled this, and think about ways you could use it to attract and/or educate your clients.

Computers that Heal Themselves?

I don't know about you, but I'm a Star Trek fan from way back. When Star Trek debuted the first "Next Generation" episode I was convinced my Star Trek days were over, but I stuck around and loved them. One particular segment (the first Borg episode) came to mind when I read in Wired Magazine that techies are working on producing computer chips that will fix defects they have automatically. That image immediately made me think of seeing the Borg ship repairing itself after the Enterprise has blasted it with everything Captain Piccard could order.

I guess we shouldn't be surprised that the things we see on Star Trek are now regular parts of our lives. Flip phones have been modeled after Captain Kirk's communicator for over 20 years now, so why not a computer that heals itself, grows, adapts, and copes with environmental changes.

Read all about this development on page 42 of Wired Magazine.

The Quest for Cheap Gas!

Looking for cheap gas? You're not alone, but there is help! Check out Gasbuddy.com, and Gaspricewatch.com. Both of these sites feature the latest prices on gas. Hopefully the news will be good in your neighborhood. Be sure to report it if it is.

Why don't folks take alternative fuels and gas saving devices more seriously? Who knows, but the fact is we may deserve this for being unwilling to change our habits!

Putting Your Cell Phone On Steriods

While professional atheletes continue to grapple with performance enhancing drug controversies, technology companies have demonstrated no problems with allowing consumers to "enhance" the capabilities of their cell phones. Let's see, cell phones can play games, take pictures, work like walkie-talkies, tell time, perform the functions of a personal information manager, retrieve email, and if that isn't enough, now you can even download and listen to Podcasts on your cell phone.
